Universes: Poetry in Performance

The artistic directors of Universes lead students on a journey from page to stage, beginning a process of poetry creation, then guiding that creation toward the landscape of performance. Particular emphasis is placed on movement as guided by the themes and musicality of the text, and how students can take a basic approach to understanding poetry’s inherent theatricality. Emphasis is also placed on the theatrical history behind poetry in performance from the Greeks to the present, and how to adopt technique toward individual expression.
