Sojourn Theatre

BUILT, Directed by Michael Rohd

How is community created? Who is served by development? What are the ethics of urban planning in complex, economically stratified cities? What do people want from the place where they live? BUILT explores the vastly complex journeys that have made US cities what they are today: the daily personal, civic and economic choices that determine how contemporary cities function, and how people and institutions imagine the future of cities and communities. Sojourn blends performance and dialogue in this site-responsive participatory performance set in the heart of Portland’s emerging South Waterfront district.

Sojourn Theatre is an eight-year-old ensemble making original performance in Portland and around the country, committed to a consistent investigation of the relationship artists and audiences have to place and architecture during the event of theatre. BUILT continues their pursuit of actions and practice that make use of complex research and cultural context to move beyond documentary and civic dialogue to create compelling, engaging theatre that demands presence and actual exchange.

BUILT was commissioned by the South Waterfront Artist in Residence (AiR) Program as part of its Monthly Guest Artist Series, and is the 13th and final project in the presenting cycle. The AiR program is sponsored by Williams & Dame Development and Gerding Edlen Development, with special support for this project from Realty Trust. Additional support for BUILT comes from The Boeing Company, Dayton Foundation, Flintridge Foundation, and Sojourn’s individual contributors.
