  • So here we all are. It's Saturday morning. We need coffee and maybe a bagel, and then we are headed to PICA for the Noontime Chat "Art and Activism" with TBA artist John Jasperse. Then we will be dashing back and forth between the opening, and I might add, WORLD PREMIERE, of the Marty Schnapf, Monstersquad and Menomena flour, water and light explosion, and also the first of our Film Series, Zoe Beloff, co- presented with Cinema Project.

When that's all over, we're headed to MACHINEWORKS , where admission tonight only is FREE FREE FREE, to all after 10 pm. We will see you at the sunken bar under the flashing of WK12 and Topher Sinkinson's projections, and the glowing of the Giant Chandeliers. Also at MACHINEWORKS, don't miss Justin Harris's one-man-theater project, with sing sing melodies, bittersweet like a heartache. Ask the MACHINEWORKS box office for directions!

Choreographer Tahni Holt and painter/installation artist Marty Schnapf have teamed up with the musicians of Menomena to produce a trilogy that is one part water, one part flour and one part light. Crashing moments of intricate conflicts are buttressed by pure, unmitigated communication in a complex interplay of weight change, and the all-too- prevalent realization that time is running out. Under an Hour consists of three 20-minute parts. One ticket provides admission to all parts.

    On the Screen: Zoe Beloff

    Program 1
Shadowland or Light From the Other Side

    Guild Theatre
    4 pm

New York based film and media artist Zoe Beloff uses both digital and archaic film trickery to conjure up phantasmagorical worlds where mediums conjure up spirits, calling shadowy beings into reality. Drawing from cinema history, psychoanalytical studies and 19th century accounts of sÈances and mediums, Beloff's multi-media works create a dialog between technology, history and the unconscious.

For her first Portland appearance, Beloff will present two different programs of work. The first show features Shadow Land or Light from the Other Side and Lost. Shadow Land is stereoscopic, 16mm film that is drawn from the 1897 autobiography of Elizabeth d'EspÈrance, a materializing medium who could produce full body apparitions. Lost is a piece for stereo 35mm slides, hand- cranked 16mm projection and phonograph that recreates forgotten spaces from New York's Lower East Side.

    AC Dickson: eBay Powerseller

    Wieden+Kennedy Atrium
    2 pm

Portland artist Andrew Dickson has amassed a body of work that blends critical social observation with sophisticated comedy. An odyssey through the culture of eBay, get-rich-quick schemes and our brave new part-time/work-from-home economy, Dickson's newest work is a PowerPoint tutorial designed to unlock the secrets of Internet auction salesmanship as well as investigate how the online economy is changing our socio- political landscape.

Dickson's alter-ego, AC, empowers rather than defrauds his audience by offering a step-by-step explanation of how to legitimately sell on one's own. He demystifies the rich history of the auction dating back to the Roman empire, articulates eBay's corporate success in the face of a general dot.com bust, and documents the paradigm shift from the salary-based economy of yesterday to the self-employed work from home landscape of tomorrow. Audience members are encouraged to bring along an item they'd like to sell.

What should one do when things haven't worked out as one might have hoped? In an abstract and often spiritual reflection, CALIFORNIA attempts to make sense of those situations that, in reality, fail to conform to the projection of fantasy.

John Jasperse's most recent work, CALIFORNIA, performed by five dancers with a commissioned score by Jonathan Bepler and set design by Ammar Eloueini. (Eloueini will be giving a lecture on Sunday, September 12th at 5 pm)
