Proceeded by a short introduction by TBA:07 Artist and PICA Artist in Residence Arnold J. Kemp, this double feature of John Carpenter's Prince of Darkness, and Dario Argento's classic Suspiria will kick off his residency in Portland. Watch the Suspiria trippy trailer! Come meet the artist after the screenings at Savoy Tavern & Bistro (2500 SE Clinton Street).
While in residence, Kemp will be developing on his series Daydream Nation, a series of paintings, text works and video that are fueled by the psychological terror of the aforementioned films. Kemp will also initiate an open call for works to be curated into his show, which debuts at PICA’s TBA:07 this fall. Artists of all ages and experience will be invited to submit work for his review. In a former life, Kemp was a curator at San Francisco's Yuerba Buena Center for the Arts. Please email PICA Visual Art Program Director Kristan Kennedy (kristan@pica.org) for submission guidelines.
In 2000, Arnold J. Kemp exhibited a series of drawings in Freestyle at the Studio Museum in Harlem. He has had solo exhibitions at ESP Gallery, the Luggage Store Gallery, Quotidian Gallery, and Stephen Wirtz Gallery in San Francisco. He has also shown in New York at Debs & Co. and is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Arnold J. Kemp's residency is supported by The Visual Artists Network (VAN), a pilot project initiated by the National Performance Network. VAN was created to establish opportunities for visual artists to participate in residencies in a context of community engagement. PICA is one of four NPN partner organizations to receive this award.
The VAN Pilot Project is made possible through the support of The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts and the Arts Council of New Orleans.
