Submissions Guidelines

Answers to your questions about project proposals for PICA and the Time-Based Art Festival.

General Submissions

The Time-Based Art Festival and PICA's ongoing programs are curated by our Artistic and Curatorial Staff, and participation is by invitation only. Various factors impact the inclusion of a project in our programming calendar, including artistic integrity, suitability, funding, and scheduling. Because of these requirements, it is rare that unsolicited proposals will result in exhibition or performance opportunities. We strongly suggest that you familiarize yourself with our past programming before you submit a proposal, so that you will best understand the type of work we present.

There is no formal application process, but if you would like to introduce us to your work, please submit a cover letter, resume, or bio, and representative examples of your work. For project-based proposals, please submit a cover letter, resume or bio; a letter describing the project; representative examples of your work; and a sample budget or tech rider for the project.

Format:
We prefer to receive all documentation digitally, and we do not accept unsolicited, original artwork.
Please do not email large files.

  • Multi-media, video, film, and performance submissions: Documentation can be sent on a DVD or as a link to online samples.
  • Visual Submissions: Include a cover letter/CV, project description, and images in a single PDF. Do not submit images as JPGs, TIFs, etc.

Submit online to: submissions@pica.org. In the subject line, please specify PERFORMANCE, VISUAL, or HYBRID.

The best way for us to know your work is to see your work! Please keep us informed of your performances and exhibitions. To stay up-to-date on other opportunities with PICA and in the community, please sign up for our email list at left.

Note: Due to the volume of materials received, the review process may take several months, and we will not respond to all submissions.

Residencies are awarded to artists whom we have invited to present; there is no open call for residency applications.

Resource Room Residency Submissions Guidelines

PICA's Resource Room Residents are selected in part through an open call for proposals. RRRs are "drop-in" residencies: artists have access to the space during open PICA hours unless special arrangements are made in advance. At this time, we cannot provide travel or housing for RRRs. A modest stipend of up to $500 dollars will be provided to all residents, and PICA will provide other support and materials to RRRs wherever possible.

To be considered for a Resource Room Residency, please submit the following:

  • A written proposal of up to 254 words
  • No more than two links to representative online samples of your work (websites, portfolios, videos, writing, mp3s, etc.) Please do not email large files; we do not accept .zip files or downloads.
  • Rank your preferred Residency times from 1 to 3. Residencies for 2013 will run February-April, May-July, and October-December.

All submissions must be directed to submissions@pica.org with "Resource Room Residency" in the subject line. Please, no phone inquiries or mailed applications. Proposals are due by November 1, 2012. Applicants will be notified December 3, 2012.

Please, no phone or drop-in inquiries regarding the submission process. We have kept the process simple and we hope that all of the information needed can be found here in these guidelines.
