CYNTHIA HOPKINS/GLORIA DELUXE
Hopkins/Gloria Deluxe
Backed by her rollicking band Gloria Deluxe, Hopkins performs songs from her new show-in-progress, Must Don’t Whip ‘Um. A prequel to the events in her critically acclaimed operetta Accidental Nostalgia, Must Don’t Whip ‘Um is the story of Cameron Seymour, an obscure and almost totally forgotten pop star from the 1970’s whose financial, artistic, personal and political failures have brought her to the verge of a nervous breakdown, resulting in her desire to quit the entertainment industry and escape from the United States. Don’t miss Hopkins’ high-spirited blend of alt-country, Southern soul, and cabaret songs punctuated by ebullient horns, soaring strings, and beatific choral harmonies.
Described as “Part country, part Lou Reed, part Patti Smith, part performance artist” by The Washington Post, Cynthia Hopkins is a writer, composer, multi-instrumentalist and theater artist who is celebrated as much for her acting and writing as she is for her unique brand of songwriting and music making. She has won multiple Obie and Bessie awards for her work as a performer, composer, and creator of unique music/theater works featuring her band, Gloria Deluxe. Accidental Nostalgia, Hopkins’ operetta about the pros and cons of amnesia, has been presented by St. Ann’s Warehouse (NY), On the Boards (Seattle), the Walker Art Center (Minneapolis), the Philadelphia Live Arts Festival, the Society for the Performing Arts (Houston), and the Wexner Center (Ohio).
