The Leftbank Project
240 N Broadway Portland OR
The 2008 Time-Based Art Festival marks the return of the late night den of provocative music, theatre, cabaret, and other delights otherwise known as THE WORKS. Along with all the wee hour events, this year’s edition will also open in the daylight hours, playing host to the Visual Art Program of exhibitions and installations. The entire WORKS hullabaloo will be held at the newly developed Leftbank Project.
Located at the head of the Broadway Bridge in the Rose Quarter district, the Leftbank Building has a dynamic history paralleling the evolution of its Portland neighborhood. Originally built as a creamery and restaurant called the Hazelwood Building, the space has been known for life-sized butter carvings, the drafting of the Portland City Club charter, plastics manufacturing and most notably as the jazz club The Dude Ranch, which featured throughout its history shows by such remarkable talents as Thelonious Monk, Coleman Hawkins, Lucky Thompson, Charlie Barnet, and the Banjoski house band.
Leftbank is the pairing of a building and a vision: the commercial development of a Portland landmark with a community of mission-driven tenants. These people are uncommonly dedicated to what they do. They devote themselves to craft, creativity, art, reuse, and collaboration. Portland is full of passionate, creative, thoughtful people—Leftbank evolves in service to them.
