An experiment in confined space, Ten Tiny Dances is dedicated to fostering inventive dance and theater on a tiny stage, providing an accessible and exciting performance experience for a diverse audience. Produced by Portland choreographer Mike Barber, the series challenges artists to collapse known vocabulary as well as to make new material that responds to the constraints of the space. It interrupts the usual expectations for dance vocabulary, performance, and viewing, and affects the way people move and are perceived in space. What began with a simple idea has grown into one of the Northwest’s most popular performance series. Since 2002, the platform has inspired an ever-expanding roster of creations and performances: close to 200 emerging and established artists, dozens of engaging venues, and five cities have taken part in Ten Tiny Dances.
