At the heart of the library experience lies the value of sharing. Sharing materials, stories, content, spaces. In his residency, Felton has been considering how our culture of digital and social sharing has narrowed the gap between “producers” and “consumers.” With widely available creation tools (iMovie, Photoshop), and “democratic” means for distribution (YouTube, Flickr, Facebook), we’re now simultaneously making and devouring content. According to Felton, “An artist’s products are publicized and shared in a manner not too dissimilar from a Facebook post about your birthday party, pictures from your vacation. How is an artwork distinguished from the prattle? Who cares? Has art finally found its proper place?”

For this one-night exhibit, Felton will present a mix of works new and old, created through his residency, as well as by a small group of guests and collaborators. In the true spirit of libraries, Felton’s show will share space with other artists, share new amentities with the PICA office, and share a newly published artist interview with all visitors.
