The short films of Destricted turn the lens on controversial issues about the representation of sexuality in art; opening up the question of whether art can be disguised as pornography or whether pornography can be represented as art. After four years of being banned from US theatrical release (where pornography regulation is a topic of constant contention), Destricted finally arrives in Portland, ready to provoke discussion over the thin borders between pornography and art.
Conceived at the flashpoint of art and pornography, the short films commissioned and collected for Destricted have sparked ongoing and heated debate as to the role of sex in art, cinema, and society, and the rights of artists, filmmakers, and ordinary citizens to engage with sexually explicit material in ways that extend beyond the purely commercial language of pornography.
The PICA screening will feature films by Matthew Barney, Cecily Brown, Larry Clark, Marilyn Minter, Richard Prince, and two special shorts not included on the DVD release by Marina Abramovic and Sam Taylor-Wood. Curated by Neville Wakefield, Mel Agace, and Andrew Hale.
