Inspired by Japanese author Jun’ichiro Tanizaki’s famous essay “In Praise of Shadows,” Kota Yamazaki’s latest dance explores the subtle beauty found in light and shadows. Through a collaboration between six dancers from Japan, America, Ethiopia, and Senegal, (glowing) reexamines the fundamentals of Yamazaki’s butoh training. Where the forms intersect, (glowing) posits a universal communication where the avant-garde and traditional ideas can harmonize.
Co-commissioned by Japan Society and EMPAC (Experimental Media Performing Arts Center), (glowing) is supported by Japan Foundation and Lower Manhattan Cultural Council through a residency at Building 110: LMCC’s Arts Center at Governors Island. (glowing) was made possible by the New England Foundation for the Arts’ National Dance Project, with lead funding from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation and additional funding from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
